Marriage License Information

Please contact the County Clerk's office for the County in which you plan to be married for
their latest rules and regulations. This page is only intended to be a general guide. A few of
the counties in the greater Nashville area are
Davidson, Rutherford, Williamson, and Wilson.

General Information:

    Cost of License:     The marriage license fee is approximately 95 dollars. Couples who complete a     four hour marriage counseling course by a qualified counselor or minister will     will be charged approximately 35 dollars. If either the county or the counselor     does not approve the session, you must pay full price. Residency Requirements:     None, you do not have to be a previous or current resident of Tennessee to     obtain a marriage license that is valid statewide. Waiting Period:     There is no waiting period from the time you apply for your marriage     license until the time you receive it. You will get it immediately. There is no     waiting period that you have to wait until you can get married. You can get     married as soon as you receive the license.  There is a 3 day waiting period     if you are under 18.   Age Requirement:     The minimum age for either a man or woman to marry is 18 yrs old without     parents consent. A birth certificate may be necessary to show proof of age.     If either partner is under 18, parents must be present. If a parent can not     be present, due to death, separation, divorce, or other circumstances, proper     evidence must be presented for verification.  You will need a certified copy     of your birth certificate.  If you are under 16, you may not marry without a     court order.   Blood Tests and Physical Exams:     No blood test or physical exam are required.   License Expires:     Your license will expire 30 days from the date it was issued.   Divorced and Widowed Applicants:     If previously married, the date of divorce or date of spouse's death must     be provided. Bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate.     A copy of your divorce records or spouse's death certificate can be ordered     online.   Proxy Marriages:     Proxy marriages are not allowed.   Cousin Marriages:     1st cousin marriages are allowed. Common Law Marriages:     Common-Law marriages are not allowed. Same Sex Marriages:     Same-Sex marriages are not allowed.

 Each applicant must provide identification and proof of age by showing the following:

Applications must be filled out and Social Security Numbers and Proof of Age and Identity
must be shown. (Certified Birth Certificate, Drivers License).

Note: If a woman plans to change her name because of marriage (or any other reason),
she needs to contact the
Social Security Administration to get a new Social Security card.
This would also apply if children will be changing their names. Click here for
